Abstract
The invention relates to the fields of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. In particular, it relates to a multipotent cell type that is of endothelial progenitor cell origin that can differentiate into various cell types. Provided are isolated multipotent cells derived from blood borne cells that can be induced to differentiate in vivo or ex vivo. Also provided is a method to isolate non-ES multipotent cells, comprising the steps of a) obtaining mononuclear cells from blood an animal; b) establishing a population of adherent cells having an endothelial phenotype; c) allowing the cells obtained in step b) to transdifferentiate into multipotent cells; and d) stabilizing said multipotent cells.
