Method for preparing a porous foam material by dissolving the polymer and mixing in a carbonate compound

Abstract

A method for preparing a biodegradable and biocompatible, porous, polymeric scaffold for tissue engineering is described. The method involves the steps of: a) dissolving a polymer in an organic solvent to prepare a polymeric solution; b) mixing an effervescent salt in the resulting polymeric solution to give a polymer/salt/organic solvent mixed gel; c) removing the organic solvent from the polymer/salt/organic solvent mixed gel; and d) immersing the gel in acidic solution to render the salt to effervesce to yield a polymeric scaffold. Alternatively a non-solvent can be added after step a) to prepare the resulting polymeric solution such that the polymer is precipitated and concentrate to form a polymeric gel.
