Biodegradable Triblock Copolymers and Process for Their Preparation

Biodegradable Triblock Copolymers and Process for Their Preparation

Abstract

PURPOSE: Provided are a triblock co-polymer comprising polyethylene glycol/polylactide(or polyglycolide or polycaprolactone)/polyetheylene glycol with enhanced reactivity and its preparation method. This co-polymer is used in tissue engineering or as a slow releasing matrix of drugs or pesticides by bio-compatible ester group. The product is selected from the triblock co-polymers shown by chemical formula 1, 2, 3 and 4 for each purpose. CONSTITUTION: The triblock co-polymer is represented by chemical formula 1, 2, 3 and 4 (formula 1 is PEG-COO-PL-OCO-PEG, formula 2 is PEG-COO-PG-OCO-PEG, formula 3 is PEG-COO-(PL/PG)-OCO-PEG, and formula 4 is PEG-COO-PCL-OCO-PEG), where PEG is polyethylene glycol, PL is polylactide, PG is polyglycolide and PCL is polycaprolactone. The mol. wt. of polylactide, polyglycolide, polylactide/polyglycolide and polycaprolactone is 500-30,000 and polyetheylene glycol has 750-10,000 mol. wt.. The triblock co-polymer is prepared by coupling polylactide(or polyglycolide or polycaprolactone) with OH group at both end with polyetheylene glycol which has very reactive acyl halide group at one end with pyridine as a catalyst.
