Abstract
A series of new bacterial strains which are particularly useful for vaccine manufacture, for the treatment of intestinal and similar diseases such as cholera. The invention also includes a new method of Genetic Engineering particularly useful for manufacture of the vaccines. Bacterial strains are characterised by having a gene set substantially derived from a non-pathogen or a pathogen rendered non-pathogenic and able to invade, multiply, and briefly colonize the lymphoid tissue of the small intestine of mammalian species and having an introduced gene, genes or part thereof effective to specify synthesis of an antigen or antigens effective to generate a protective immune response due to production of IgA antibodies into the small intestine and other secretory surfaces.
